Tuolumne River Rafting

A guide to California Whitewater Rafting

Whitewater Rafting Permits for the Tuolumne & Cherry Creek

Whitewater Rafting Permits are required for private / non-commercial and commercial whitewater rafting outfitters on the Main Tuolumne and Cherry Creek. Whitewater rafting permits are obtainable by telephone or in-person through the USFS Groveland Ranger Station. There are generally fewer people using the river during the week than on the weekends, so you might consider a midweek trip.

Obtaining Your Permit

You can reserve your whitewater rafting permits in advance. Cancellations do occur and these permits can be obtained the day of your trip by visiting the Groveland Ranger station, but don't count on a cancellation. The USFS Groveland Ranger Station is located 9 miles east of Groveland on California Highway 120.

Walk-in permits are free when available. Permit reservations cost $15 for groups up to 10 and an additional $2 per person is charged up to 26 rafters. The Groveland ranger station can usually mail your permit to you, or pick up on your way to put-in. Permits are not required if you are rafting from October 1 through April 30. For more information about whitewater rafting permits, visit permits page on the Groveland Ranger District site.
